Your first step should be to make sure your record needle and vinyl record(s) is clean. If your record needle skips while playing records, or plays muffled/ or distorted sounds, it may be time to buy a new record needle.

Manufacturers recommend replacing the stylus of a turntable every 1000 hours of playing. Consider how often you play your records, but they only need to be switched out every 2-3 years.

How Do I Clean a Record Needle?

Accepted Answer

Use a designated stylus brush and cleaning solution and rub the brush forward and back, going with the design of the stylus. Make sure not to rub the brush side to side as this will affect the stylus's shape.

An affordable and proven method also includes: dipping the head of a q-tip in an alcohol solution and scrubbing the stylus back and forth until clean.
